Atlassian Marketplace Licensing
From version 4.0.0, Admin Essentials for Jira is distributed as a paid product on the Atlassian Marketplace. The app requires an active license to edit custom fields, configure thresholds and contexts, and create or modify workflow validators. Data already stored on issues remains visible without a license.
The license covers the full application — there is no per-module licensing. Billing and renewals are managed through the Atlassian Marketplace and your site's consolidated invoice.
License states
| State | Description | What your team can do |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Purchased license in good standing | Full use: edit fields, configure, and manage validators |
| Trial | Marketplace evaluation period (30 days) | Same as an active license |
| Inactive or expired | No license or expired subscription | View existing data only; no editing or configuration |
Behaviour without an active license
| Screen or action | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| View a custom field on an issue | Stored value remains visible; an informational notice is shown |
| Edit a custom field | Blocked with a warning message |
| Configure thresholds, currency, country, or other field settings | Blocked |
| Create or edit a workflow validator | Configuration screen blocked |
| View the summary of an existing validator | Read-only recap visible |
Messages users will see
The app displays notices in English, regardless of the Jira site language:
Admin Essentials for Jira requires an active Atlassian Marketplace license. Please contact your Jira administrator to purchase or renew a license.
| Situation | What the user sees |
|---|---|
| View a field with a stored value | The value remains visible with an informational banner showing the message above |
| Edit a field or configure settings | The screen is blocked and shows only the message above |
| Workflow validator configurator (Fields Required / Field Dependency) | Same blocked screen; the field list does not load |
Tell users to contact their Jira administrator if they see License required. Purchase or renewal is managed from the Marketplace or from the site's Settings → Billing.

What users can do without a license
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| View values already stored on issues | Edit add-on custom fields |

| Run transitions with validators already saved (see limitation below) | Create or edit Fields Required or Field Dependency validators |
If users see License required, direct them to your Jira administrator to manage the Marketplace license.
Product policies
Already-configured workflow validators
A workflow validator already saved on a transition may keep applying even after the license expires. This is a Jira platform limitation: rules stored in the workflow do not check license state at transition time.
Practical implications:
- License protection applies when configuring validators (creating, editing, or saving changes).
- To stop enforcement after expiry, the administrator must remove or disable the validator in the workflow.
